Asuna Kagurazaka is the main female protagonist of the series and is the first of the students to meet Negi. Due to her admiration and feelings for her former teacher, Takamichi Takahata, and by the fact she is not fond of children, her original reception of Negi was rather poor, making constant complaints about the child professor. When she discovers Negi is a mage, she originally attempts to blackmail him, but in a short time, she begins to care deeply for the child prodigy and takes the role of his guardian and protective partner.
She has a reputation for being quite violent and for her poor grades, even being inducted into the failing team of students known as the Baka Rangers. Despite this, she has been shown to pick up on skills rather quickly and has a knack for knowing when Negi is trying to hide the truth from her. She also seems to possess the ability to nullify magic, a trick that has saved her and her friends hides on several occasions. Despite being on relatively friendly terms with the bulk of her classmates, she seems to only be close to a couple of the girls, Konoka, her roommate, and Ayaka, who she has a love-hate frenemy relationship with. She is an orphan and her past before arriving at Mahora has all been forgotten, but she comes to learn that her history may have been best left forgotten.
